There are several programs for drug addiction treatment in Alabama, but none of them are as well-received and as popular as the outpatient treatment program. The main benefit that goes in favor of this program is that the patient continues to live at home even as he or she receives the treatment for their addiction condition. This is certainly quite different from the several other programs prevalent in the state where the patients are made to be isolated from their families and are treated under very strict principles and therapies.

There are three prime elements associated with the outpatient treatment program in Alabama. The first is the maintenance medication. This is the phase where the patient is provided some kind of medication in order to overcome the temptation for the substance of addiction. This medication is also used to mitigate the condition of withdrawal that the patient might experience upon abstaining from the substance of addiction.

The second element is the one on one counseling. Here the patient is taught how to overcome the emotional issues that might be keeping them within the addiction. This needs a very elaborate approach in itself and in most cases it will be handled by a psychiatric counselor. Thirdly, there is an education program that is conducted in a group format. Here the addicted persons are trained on various aspects of the addiction including how it can wreak havoc in their lives and what they can do to overcome it.

Most centers that provide outpatient addiction treatment in Alabama will also conduct a family counseling program so that they can be helped to overcome their own issues related to the person's addiction.
